Once you have imported a list of contacts from VAN, you can create a group in ThruText with your list.
Step 1: Getting Started
Navigate to the External Contacts List page in your account dropdown of the admin console.
Select 'Create Group' to build your group based on the list of your choosing that you have imported from VAN. This will bring you to the Group Creation Wizard where you will be asked to name your group and map your data for upload.
Step 2: Mapping Your Data
The Group Creation Wizard will walk you through naming your group and mapping your data.
You will be asked to map the 3 required fields – First Name, Last Name, and Phone Number.
FOR IF YOU DO NOT KNOW WHICH PHONE FIELD TO USE: You will see multiple available phone fields from VAN. Where your specific VAN "houses" most of its cell numbers varies from state to state. While we recommend using the field labeled "Phone," which is also known as "Preferred Phone" in VAN, you'll have to check with your VAN administrator to see what works best for your state and committee.
Next, map your VAN ID fields to enable ThruText survey questions to sync back to VAN. This step will determine from which side of VAN — My Voters or My Campaign -- you will be able to sync ThruText survey questions when you launch a campaign targeted to the group you are importing. KEY NOTE: If you are importing a "Voter File" list, you must map VAN ID = VAN ID:

Failure to map this data appropriately will impact your survey question synchronization to VAN.
Next, you will map your VAN Phone ID. You will want to be sure to map the PhoneID field that matched the type of phone number you are using. For example, if you are using CellPhone then you will want to map the VAN Phone Number ID to CellPhoneId. This would apply to HomePhone (map to HomePhoneID), Phone (map to PhoneID), etc.
If you are pulling Preferred Phone in VAN (this shows up as just 'Phone' in the dropdown) you will want your Phone ID mapping to look like this:

Map any additional custom fields as required for your scenario.
PRO-TIP: Do NOT map your VANID or VAN Campaign ID to CanvassFilerRequestID.
This is a common error in mapping that leads to a failed sync between ThruText and VAN. CanvassFilerRequestID is an ID that identifies your saved list file request from VAN.
Step 3: Review & Create Your Group
Review your work and click 'Create Group' when you are finished.
Your group will process just as a CSV upload, and will change to Status: 'Active' when complete.
You can now use this group in the creation of campaigns.
